Polkadot is a blockchain network that aims to connect an ecosystem of blockchains through several unique features. The network is able to facilitate the cross-chain transfer of assets and data, allowing a number of blockchain networks to be interoperable with each other. This allows for the creation of a fully decentralized and private web, with each network controlled by its users, and simplifies the process of creating new institutions, applications and services.
Due to its interoperability functionality, Polkadot is able to connect public and private chains, permissionless networks, future technologies as well as oracles. These individual networks can then securely share information and transactions through the Polkadot network.
The Polkadot network is made up of two chains: a relay chain (also called the main chain) and user-generated, parallel chains called parachains. The main chain is where all transactions are permanently agreed while the parachains are application-specific and provide data that is coherent and validatable by the validators on the relay chain.
DOT serves as the native token fueling the platform, while also offering network governance to its holders and responsible for bonding parachains. The maximum supply of the token is 1 billion DOT. See the chart above depicting the DOT price data and use the Buy button to start trading.
