How to Spend Crypto with Apple Pay

Apple Pay does not directly store or transfer cryptocurrency. Instead, crypto spending through Apple Pay uses a compatible payment card issued by a cryptocurrency service. When the card is added to Apple Wallet and used at a contactless terminal, the provider converts an eligible cryptocurrency balance into the merchant’s local currency and processes the purchase through the card network. Oobit is one example of a service that links crypto balances to card-based payments.

Setting Up Crypto Payments

First, create and verify an account with a provider that supports Apple Pay and obtain its eligible virtual or physical payment card. Open the provider’s app, select the card, and choose Add to Apple Wallet. Follow Apple’s verification steps, which may include identity confirmation or a one-time code. The card must be issued in a country and currency supported by both the provider and Apple Pay.

Before spending, review which assets the card supports, how the provider selects the payment balance, and whether it automatically converts crypto at the time of purchase. Some services support stablecoins and multiple cryptocurrencies, while others require users to exchange assets into a card balance in advance. Fees, exchange rates, spending limits, and transaction availability vary by provider and jurisdiction.

Making a Purchase

At a participating retailer, double-click the iPhone’s side button, authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode, and hold the device near the contactless reader. Online and in-app purchases use the Apple Pay button in a similar way. The payment terminal receives a tokenized card transaction rather than the user’s wallet address. The crypto provider handles conversion and settlement, while the merchant generally receives local currency through the card network.

After payment, check the provider’s transaction record for the cryptocurrency amount deducted, exchange rate, fees, and final fiat value. Cryptocurrency disposals may create tax-reporting obligations depending on the user’s jurisdiction. Apple Pay availability, card support, merchant acceptance, and crypto-to-fiat conversion rules should therefore be confirmed before relying on the method for regular spending.
