After a centralized exchange collapse, users commonly reassess where risk sits in the custody chain. Exchanges typically maintain internal ledgers that update instantly within the platform, while on-chain settlement occurs only when deposits or withdrawals are processed. Self-custody uses on-chain transactions for asset movement, meaning transfers are recorded on the blockchain and are not contingent on an exchange reopening withdrawals. This also changes how “finality” is understood: settlement depends on network confirmation rather than a platform’s internal accounting.
Self-custody introduces practical routines that are less critical on exchanges: secure seed storage (often offline), redundancy (multiple backups in separate locations), device security, and careful transaction verification (addresses, networks, and approvals). Users also need to understand network-specific details such as choosing the correct chain for a stablecoin and managing transaction fees; many wallet ecosystems reduce complexity through fee management tools, but the underlying responsibility remains with the holder of the keys.
Following an exchange failure, users often still need ways to spend or convert value without returning to full custodial exposure.
