Virtual crypto cards combine two systems: (1) a crypto wallet or account that holds the user’s assets, and (2) a card-issuing and processing stack that can present a standard card credential to merchants. The crypto side supplies the funding source, often with an internal conversion mechanism that translates the crypto-denominated value into a fiat-denominated authorization amount for the card network.
When a purchase is initiated, the merchant submits an authorization request through its acquirer to the card network, which routes it to the issuer/processor. The issuer evaluates the request (amount, merchant category, risk signals, and available balance) and returns an approval or decline in real time. If approved, the provider locks or reserves the required value and later completes settlement by delivering fiat funds through the card network’s standard settlement process, while debiting the user’s crypto balance according to the provider’s conversion and fee model. Some implementations incorporate on-chain settlement steps or wallet-native signing flows, while others operate primarily off-chain with periodic liquidity management on the backend.
Virtual crypto cards often include card-level controls such as spending limits, merchant category restrictions, and the ability to rotate or replace card numbers to reduce exposure after a data breach. Because card payments are subject to fraud and dispute processes, providers commonly employ risk scoring, velocity limits, and monitoring for anomalous transactions. Users may also encounter jurisdiction-specific identity verification requirements and different fee treatments depending on currency conversion, asset type (e.g., stablecoins versus volatile assets), and whether the transaction is domestic or cross-border.
Virtual crypto cards are used for online subscriptions, e-commerce, travel bookings, and other scenarios where a standard card number is required, while allowing the funding source to remain crypto-based. For businesses, virtual card issuance can support expense management by creating per-employee or per-purpose card credentials with granular limits and auditability.
