DePay settlement is a wallet-native payment and settlement model in which a user authorizes a transaction directly from a self-custody wallet and the resulting value transfer is settled through a combination of on-chain execution and traditional payout rails. In practical terms, DePay aims to remove the need for pre-funding a custodial account before spending, while still allowing merchants to receive local currency through established payment networks.
A typical DePay flow begins at the moment of purchase, when the payer signs a single authorization from their wallet for a specified amount and asset (commonly stablecoins such as USDT or USDC). That signed request triggers an on-chain settlement step that transfers value according to the transaction parameters, after which the merchant receives a fiat-denominated payout through card or bank rails. This structure separates the payer’s asset (on-chain) from the merchant’s settlement preference (often off-chain fiat), with conversion and routing handled as part of the settlement process rather than via a separate top-up step.
DePay settlement combines different notions of finality: the blockchain confirmation that the on-chain leg executed, and the payment-network or banking confirmation that fiat payout was completed. Systems built around DePay often expose a “settlement preview” at authorization time, showing the exchange rate used, the estimated or absorbed network fee, and the merchant payout amount, which reduces ambiguity about how much is being sent and what the recipient effectively receives. Gas abstraction is frequently used so the user experience resembles a conventional card payment even though one component is executed on-chain.
Because DePay sits at the boundary of blockchain settlement and regulated payout systems, implementations typically include identity and risk controls at the points where fiat rails are accessed, while preserving self-custody on the payer side. In consumer payments this is often expressed as a single approval step at checkout; in business contexts it can be extended to spend limits, category rules, and logging for reconciliation.
